The Yards Win the Surface Design Awards 2023

We are extremely proud that the St. Martins Courtyard project, The Yards, won the Highly Commended Award for best Light and Surface Exterior Design at the 2023 Surface Design Awards. Congratulations to Brimelow McsSweeney Architects and the whole team involved in delivering this iconic project.

Studio-29 were tasked with revitalising and increasing the footfall into St Martins Courtyard – The Yards. The original concept was to create enticing entrances into the courtyard at each of the primary gateways which led to a beautiful open-air courtyard containing shops and restaurants in the heart of Covent Garden. The first entrance from Mercer Street turned a dark and dismal concrete soffit into an interactive light installation with a mirrored ceiling. The second entrance was a protruding dichroic glass canopy into Upper St Martins Lane which caught the eye from a distance and the third entrance on Slingsby Place was a sculptural suspended installation, which was inspired by the glass sculptures of Dale Chihuly.

The inner courtyard was revitalised by BMC, cladding the facades with the continuous back lit, flower pattern and creating another level within the courtyard using Corian and lighting to produce an oasis for dining.
